Transgender actor Indya Moore, 24, brought the fashion industry to tears when they delivered a powerful and eloquent acceptance speech detailing what life is like for black trans women in America today.

The non-binary Pose star, who uses the pronouns they/their, wore earrings which contained small photo frames portraying the images of the 16 black trans women who have been murdered this year alone. In a gut-wrenching reality check, Indya also carried a photo frame showing the smiling face of a 17-year-old trans woman who had been killed three days before the awards.

As they accepted the Cover of the Year award for their monumental appearance on Elle magazine, the Bronx, New York-native shared the stark statistic that they may not live past the age of 35; the life expectancy for a black trans woman.

Indya, who appears as Angel Evangelista in FX’s Pose, said they were ‘honored and grateful’ to be the first trans individual to cover Elle, but also noted that it was a ‘bittersweet’ moment.

‘It’s a bittersweet feeling…Right now in the Supreme Court, they’re voting on whether or not trans people can access employment, shelter and healthcare in the same ways that you all have access. It’s hard to celebrate being celebrated for being myself during a time when people like me are being murdered for being themselves,’ they said.

‘This year, 16 known women were taken from us because of that same fear.On this day that I’m celebrated and awarded for being visible, I decided to bring them with me. I’m wearing them on my ears as earrings.’

The heartbreaking accessory was created by the designer Aree Yoseefaw in conjunction with Indya’s stylist Ian Bradley.

‘When Ian, my beloved friend and stylist prepared the earrings he was worried that another women would be murdered and that it would be too late to include her,’ Indya said.

‘On Labor Day, Monday, a 17-year-old girl named Bailey Reeves was shot to death in D.C.I’m grieving with her family. She would make the 17th, and youngest-known black trans female murdered this year by gun violence.’

In tribute to Bailey, Indya had placed a gilded gold photo frame baring her image on the stage for all to see.

‘Just like me, these women dared to exhaust their freedom to exist by being visible. However, instead of being celebrated they’re punished for it.’
